The Paramedic to RN Program - Stepping out of an ambulance and into a hospital ER

Most paramedics eventually tire of the long hours and stressful emergency calls and the thought of a hospital nursing job is given some serious thought. The drive to help people when they need it most is still at the forefront of their minds and the logic is that a hospital job will continue to provide this spiritual need but in a far more friendly environment. A significant number of paramedics suffer the issue of burn out after several years in the job and continued exposure to the various demands of a paramedic's daily working life.

The training that paramedics receive in advanced emergency care means that they have a head start when it comes to ER nursing positions. The ability to administer appropriate medication, perform immediate interventions to save a life such as cardiac and respiratory resuscitation are all skills that are vital in ER and with it comes the opportunity to interact on a longer tem basis with the patient. This means that you can actually see the results of all that training right through to the moment when the patient leaves the hospital under their own steam. The way to think about this is to consider that the paramedic saves a life for the moment while the RN provides continued care and also tries to teach the patient about dealing with their medical issues for the rest of the patient's life.

Salaries vary depending on state and institution, but an average paramedic can expect to earn around a base salary of $38,000 per year, depending on experience. An RN can expect to start on a salary average of $55,000 per year and the hours are more predictable.

So if this is you, how do you go about making the transition from paramedic to RN?
